Among the nine winners of St. Joseph's Children's Hospital Kid Heroes awards, Carolyn Yerger stood out. The 7-year-old was on a walk with her mom and little sister, when a neighborhood pit bull attacked her sister, pinning her to the ground. Without thinking of her own safety, Carolyn grabbed a nearby metal scooter and hit the dog on the head, turning its attention away from Carolyn's sister. The dog then bit Carolyn in the face and leg, before a neighbor intervened.
Carolyn has since healed and was smiling brightly when she receieved a trophy at the hospital's Kid Heroes award ceremony. The hospital has been honoring young heroes for nine years now, and out of 120 nominations, Carolyn received top honors in her age group. Her family says they're incredibly proud of their brave little girl.
